Our Overmolding Service Process

At Alpine Mold, our production tooling process is designed to support stable, long-term, and high-volume injection molding. From DFM analysis to mold manufacturing, trial validation, and final shipment, every step is carefully controlled to ensure precision, durability, and reliable mass production performance.

1.DFM Report and Mold Flow

Before your overmolding project starts, our engineering team reviews your 2D/3D drawings and product requirements. We help you check part structure, material compatibility, bonding area, gate position, shrinkage, warpage, air traps, and filling risks. Mold flow analysis can also help you optimize the product design before production development begins.

2.3D Mold Drawing Design

After you confirm the DFM and mold flow results, we start the 3D tooling design for your overmolded part. The design covers the first-shot substrate tooling, second-shot overmolding tooling, parting line, gate system, cooling layout, ejection structure, and positioning method. This helps ensure your substrate can be accurately located during the overmolding process.

3. Tooling Fabrication

Once you approve the tooling design, we begin fabrication, including CNC machining, EDM, wire cutting, drilling, polishing, and fitting. Every process is carefully controlled to help you achieve accurate part dimensions, stable material bonding, smooth surface quality, and reliable mass production performance.

4. Injection Mold the Substrate

The first production step is to mold your rigid substrate. During this stage, we carefully control the molding parameters to ensure your substrate has stable dimensions, good appearance, and accurate positioning features. A precise substrate is essential for a better overmolding result in the next step.

5. Overmolding

After your substrate is completed, it is placed into the overmolding tool for the second-shot injection. The soft or second material is molded onto the substrate to form the final overmolded part. We help you check bonding strength, appearance, flash, deformation, dimensional accuracy, and functional fit before sample approval and mass production.

6.Packaging and Shipping

Before shipment, your overmolded parts are inspected according to your quality requirements. We can check dimensions, appearance, bonding performance, assembly fit, and function. After inspection, your parts are carefully packed to ensure they are well protected during transportation and ready for use after arrival.

Quality Control for Overmolding

At Alpine Mold, every overmolded part is carefully inspected for bonding strength, insert positioning, dimensional accuracy, appearance, and sealing performance. From incoming material inspection to in-process control and final validation, we focus on stable quality for long-term mass production.

Overmolding FAQs

  • 1. What Is Overmolding?

Overmolding is an injection molding process where one material is molded over another material or component to create a single finished part. The base part can be plastic, metal, or an insert, while the overmolded material is usually a soft plastic or rubber-like material such as TPE, TPU, or silicone.

This process is commonly used to improve grip, sealing, impact resistance, appearance, and product functionality. Overmolding is widely applied in electronic enclosures, handles, medical devices, automotive parts, power tools, and consumer products.

  • 2. What Are the Advantages of Overmolding?

Overmolding helps improve both product performance and manufacturing efficiency. It can enhance product appearance, improve grip and comfort, provide better protection, and reduce assembly costs by combining multiple materials or components into one finished part.

    1. Improved aesthetics with color, texture, and soft-touch surfaces

    2.  Better functionality, such as grip, insulation, and shock absorption

    3. Increased durability against impact, wear, moisture, and vibration

    4.  Reduced assembly time and overall manufacturing cost

  • 3. Are You a Factory or a Trading Company?

Alpine Mold is a direct mold manufacturer, not a trading company. We have our own factory and in-house teams for mold design, mold manufacturing, injection molding, post-processing, quality inspection, and project management.

    Our factory is located at:
Block 3A, the 6th Industrial Area, Heshuikou Village, Gongming Town, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, China.
  • 4. How Do I Request a Quote for Overmolding Services?

  • 9. I Don’t Have Drawings, Only A Sample. How Can I Start The Project?

If you don’t have drawings and only have a physical sample, we can still help you start the project. You can first send us clear photos, overall dimensions, part weight, material information if available, and your estimated production quantity. Based on this information, we can make an initial review of the part structure, molding feasibility, possible manufacturing process, and provide a preliminary quotation.
  • 10. Can Alpine Mold Help With Material Compatibility?

Yes, absolutely. Material compatibility is one of the most critical factors in successful overmolding. At Alpine Mold, our engineering team can support material selection by reviewing the substrate material, overmold material, bonding requirements, product function, and application environment.
  • 11. What Are The Cost Considerations For Overmolding Services?

The cost of overmolding is mainly affected by mold design, mold construction, material selection, processing difficulty, cycle time, and mold trial requirements. Multi-material parts often require careful mold structure design, material compatibility review, precise machining, and stable trial adjustments to ensure good bonding and consistent quality. Although the initial tooling cost may be higher, overmolding can help reduce secondary assembly, adhesive use, and long-term production costs.
  • 12. How Do Overmolding Services Improve Product Performance?

Overmolding can improve product performance by combining the strength of a rigid substrate with the comfort, sealing, or protection of a softer material. It can add better grip, improve impact resistance, reduce vibration, enhance waterproof or dustproof performance, and make the product more durable during long-term use. With the right material selection and mold design, overmolded parts can achieve stronger bonding, better functionality, and a more reliable user experience.
