Our client is a leading U.S.-based company specializing in the design, manufacturing, and sales of retractable dog leashes. The client needed to produce high-quality, durable, and functional dog leashes with intricate plastic components, ensuring that each part met both aesthetic and performance standards. After evaluating multiple suppliers, they chose Alpine Mold for our expertise in custom injection molding and high-precision mold manufacturing.
Alpine Mold was tasked with producing five sets of injection molds for the components of a retractable dog leash. These included the leash cases, switch, hole covers, spring covers, protective jacket, and buttons. The molds were designed to meet strict functional, aesthetic, and durability requirements. The final parts were produced using our Fanuc injection molding machines, ensuring high precision and consistency for each component.
Challenges Faced in the Project and How We Addressed These Challenges
1. Complex Family Mold Design
The project involved a total of 16 retractable dog leash components. Alpine Mold designed 5 sets of family molds to efficiently produce these parts. This approach allowed us to optimize the production process, reduce costs, and ensure consistent quality across all parts.
Leash Case (Front and Back Cases):
The front and back cases were designed as a 1+1 family mold, made from PA66+15%GF. This material offers excellent strength and durability, while the surface treatment applied was VDI 30, ensuring an aesthetically pleasing finish. The family mold design ensured precise alignment during production.
Other Components (Ring, Coil Spring, Board, Hole Cover):
These parts were designed as a 1+1+1+1 family mold, also made from PA66+15%GF. This design allowed us to produce multiple parts efficiently in a single mold cycle, enhancing production efficiency and maintaining consistency in part quality.
Switch, Hole Cover, and Button Components:
The remaining parts, such as the switch, hole cover, and button, were designed as 3 sets of family molds. These components were made from PC (Polycarbonate), chosen for its impact resistance and high-temperature tolerance, ensuring the parts' durability under various conditions. The family mold design ensured consistency and optimized production time.
2. Efficient Injection Molding Services
In addition to providing high-precision mold design and manufacturing, Alpine Mold also offered comprehensive injection molding services. Using Fanuc injection molding machines, we successfully produced 16 retractable dog leash cases. Each case met the client's requirements for dimensional accuracy, aesthetic quality, and durability. Our precise injection molding process ensured that each part was perfectly aligned and met the assembly requirements.

3. Material Selection and Surface Treatment
Durability Material Selection:
Given that the leash cases needed to withstand high tensile forces and external wear, we selected PA66+15%GF (glass fiber-reinforced nylon) for the front and back cases and the protective jacket. This material provides excellent impact resistance, abrasion resistance, and high strength, making it ideal for producing high-durability components.
For the switch, hole cover, and button components, we selected PC (Polycarbonate), a material known for its excellent impact resistance and high-temperature stability, ensuring these components remain reliable in various outdoor conditions.
Surface Treatment:
For parts requiring high aesthetic standards, such as the leash case, we applied VDI 30 surface texture, achieved directly through Charmilles EDM machines. This approach eliminated the need for additional polishing, ensuring a smooth and consistent finish while also improving production efficiency and shortening delivery times.

4. Assembly Precision
Since the leash case needed to fit tightly with internal components (such as the spring, locking mechanism, and other internal parts), we ensured precise mold design and injection molding processes to achieve the required assembly precision. Our molding process controlled the dimensions and shapes of each component to ensure they fit together perfectly, preventing assembly issues due to dimensional deviations.
